Real Neon
Real neon signs are fabricated with colored glass tubes that are hand bent using direct flame to create the shapes and contours. Mercury is added, and the tube is then pumped with neon or argon gases to create the illumination when electrified. This is an art and a science.
To determine if a sign is real neon, you will often see tube supports, block out paint between the letters, transformers, rubber boots at the ends of the tubes, and other electrical components as illustrated above on this vintage sign.
These are the kinds of signs we manufacture and repair.
Faux Neon
These signs are often advertised online as "custom neon", and are made using plastic, acrylic and LED's. These are mass produced by machines, often overseas. These signs are often very inexpensive, and therefore more appropriate for short term use or one-off events.
To determine that this is faux neon, you will notice LED's are often encased in the acrylic and the letters are connected with very thin wiring.
These are not real neon signs. We do not manufacture faux neon, and they cannot be repaired once broken or dim.
